Not So Wild a Dream
By Arnold Eric Sevareid (A. A. Knopf, 1946)
My favorite biography, ever
Review by Lawrence I. Charters, January 1, 2017
My favorite biography, ever. Recommended by my high school sweetheart, this is the story of Eric Sevareid, the CBS News journalist who helped establish CBS as the most widely known news outlet on the planet. This particular volume follows Sevareid from his early life in North Dakota, through an epic journey in northern Canada, and an even more epic journey through Burma during World War II.
In the 1970s and 80s, Sevareid was known as a thoughtful, careful commentator through his editorials on CBS News. The mind behind those editorials is on vivid display in this bibliography; his writing is as clear and graceful as a winter waterfall, and just as bracing. Highly recommended.
