Agent to the Stars
By John Scalzi (Tor, ISBN: 978-1250176516)
A first novel, but it doesn’t read like one
Review by Lawrence I. Charters, September 5, 2015
This is Scalzi’s first novel, a “test” to see if he could write a novel, but it doesn’t read like one. The plot is ridiculous, but in a deliberate, fun-loving sort of way. It makes fun of Hollywood, Los Angeles, actors and entertainers, agents, and preconceived notions of extraterrestrial aliens. As the author notes, it is based in part on some real world experiences, though I’m pretty sure he made up the aliens.
A fun, easy read. I’m not fond of the 1950s style cover, but it does accurately portray the period.
